FAQs

How much should I water my new tree?

Trees should be ‘watered-in’ thoroughly when they are planted. This will help remove any possible air pockets made around the roots. On average. a 2" caliper tree requires about 15-20 gallons of water per week. It is important to keep the soil moist around the plant. To check this, dig down 2" and feel the soil; if it is moist you do not need to water. Keep in mind, lawn sprinklers will not water deep enough for a new tree. Use a hose and let it run at the base of the tree for 5 minutes. Be aware that sandy soil drains water quickly so it requires more water than clay soil.

‘watered in' means to fill the newly dug hole with water before placing the tree into the hole.

What are the red bumps on my maple leaves?

These bumps are known as galls. They are caused by small insects called mites that bite leaves in the spring. Galls on the leaves rarely hurt the tree and there is no treatment that will remove them from the foliage. Using a dormant oil spray in the spring right after the foliage has emerged, will help reduce gall formation.
