Plant options that deer typically do not eat…

The beautiful white tailed deer, that wreaks havoc on your newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials. Here are a few options and a few helpful tips to help you keep these creatures away from your landscaping.

Trees - Paper birch (betula papifera), River Birch (betula nigra), Toba Hawthorn (crataegus x mord.), Ginko (ginko biloba)

Shrubs - Barberry (berberis spp.) Cotoneaster, Lilac (syringa), Forsynthia, Potentilla, Sumac (Rhus)

Evergreens - Juniper, Pine, Spruce

Perennials - Astilbe, Bleeding Heart (dicentra), Catmint (nepeta), Coral Bell (heuchera), Iris, Lungwort (pulmonaria), Phlox, Veronica, Beebalm (monarda), Butterfly Weed (asclepias), Coneflower (echinacea), Fern, Lamb’s Ear (stachys), Peony, Russian Sage (perovskia), Yarrow (achillea)

A liquid oil-based deer repellant will work to repell deer, however this will need to be reapplied after each rainfall.

PUTTING A FENCE AROUND YOUNG APPLE TREES WILL HELP KEEP DEER FROM EATING APPLE BUDS AND SCRAPING THE TRUNK WITH THEIR HORNS.

*keep in mind, during harsh winter seasons, deer will eat any plan to survive
