History

Swedberg Nursery was founded in Battle Lake, by Jake Swedberg in 1915. The nursery was located two blocks off main street in Battle Lake and rented a piece of property across from the present location for growing. The nursery became a landmark in Battle Lake and was known for its hardy nursery stock that would grow “almost any place.”

Jake Swedberg started in the nursery business in 1906 when he worked for Rose Hill Nursery in St. Paul. Jake was honored at the Minnesota Nurseryman annual convention in Minneapolis on December 4, 1972. He was the oldest living nurseryman in the State of Minnesota.

Jake’s grandson LeRoy purchased Swedberg Nursery in 1965 and later sold the company to Jake’s nephew Robert Swedberg and his wife Eunice Swedberg. Robert and Eunice moved the business to its current location, and had its first open house in May of 1975.

Currently Timothy Swedberg (Robert and Eunice’s son) and Andrew Swedberg (Timothy’s son) co-own and operate the nursery.

Swedberg Nursery has changed and grown through its many years of business, but has not changed in its focus to deliver quality plant material with outstanding customer service at a fair value.
